Lights for a Cause

Maranoa Regional Council helps to spread awareness of a range of health and social issues. One of the ways we do this is by using the Festoon and tree lights in McDowall Street and the Big Rig to reflect the colours that promote the cause. 

Below is a guide to the 2025 campaigns we are supporting.

  • Blue for World Lymphoedema Day, 6 March.

    This is a time to shine the light on Lymphoedema, a dangerous swelling resulting from the malfunction of the lymphatic system and what you can do to help those living with this condition.

    Red for World Tuberculosis Day, 24 March.

    A day to spread awareness of the worlds' deadliest infectious disease and take a stand to help end tuberculosis.

  • Red for World Haemophila Day, 17 April

    Every year on 17 April World Haemophila Day is recognised worldwide to increase awareness of haemophilia, von Willebrand disease and other inherited bleeding disorders. This is a critical effort since with increased awareness comes better diagnosis and access to care for the millions who remain without treatment.

  • Purple for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month 

    May marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and coercive control, sending a clear message that violence in our communities will not be tolerated.

    Blue for Do it for Dolly Day, 10 May

    Let's honour Dolly's dream of a kinder and safer world for Australia's kids and communities. Created by Kate and Tick Everett after the tragic loss of their daughter, Dolly's Dream aims to prevent bullying and its devastating consequences through education and support. Let's stand together against bullying and make a difference.

    Blue for Childhood Apraxia of Speech, 14 May

    Apraxia of Speech is a disorder that can impact a child's ability to speak clearly and consistently. Today is a time to spread awareness in hopes to better early diagnosis and intervention.

    Red for World MS Day, 30 May

    It is a time to spread awareness about Multiple Sclerosis - one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system that is found in men and women with the common diagnostic ages from 20 - 40 year olds.

  • Red for Haemochromatosis Week, 1-7 June

    Haemochromatosis, a generic iron overload condition, can be very serious if untreated or undiagnosed. This week aims to raise awareness and promote the crutial work of member organisations dedicated to supporting those affected. 

    The good news? With early detection, Haemochromatosis is easily managed, and there's no barrier to a normal life or life expectancy. Treatment can be simple, cheap and effective.

    Purple for Migraine Awareness Month, 21 June

    This year emphasises the importance of peer support and community action in achieving milestones like getting medication listed on the PBS and combating the 'just a headache' stigma. 

    Join us for Shades for Migraine on 21 June, put on your sunnies, take a selfie and post it on social media with the hashtag #shadesformigraine to participate in this global awareness day. 

    Yellow for World Scleroderma Day, 29 June

    This day honours the bravery of those living with Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) and calls for equal treatment and care worldwide. Join us in raising awareness as FESCA launches the 'Find the Light to Bloom' campaign, highlighting the unmet needs of people with Scleroderma and urging policy-makers to prioritise better diagnosis, treatment and quality of life.

  • Green for World Hepatitis Day, 28 July

    On this day, our region comes together with the rest of Australia in spreading awareness of Hepatitis, a viral and preventable disease. Together we can put an end to this by 2030.

  • Purple, red and orange for Multicultural Queensland Month

    This month is a time of celebration, learning and action to create a more inclusive state for all cultures. 

    Maranoa Regional Council is taking part in supporting Queensland's goal to be a place everyone can thrive, contribute and feel welcome.

    Pink and Purple for National Eosinophilic Week, 6-12 August

    Join us in raising awareness for this gastrointestinal disease by joining others in the Top 8 Challenge by not eating any of the top common allergenic foods to raise funds for research.

    Purple for National Week of Action against Bullying and Violence, 11-15 August

    We all have a role in preventing bullying and speaking up to create a safe place for everyone.

    Yellow for Queensland Road Safety Week, 21-25 August

    Buckle-up for road safety. This week is about spreading awareness and knowing the importance of road safety. Join the rest of Queensland in continuing to tackle the Fatal Five - speeding, drink driving, failing to wear seatbelts, driving tired, and driving distracted.

  • Blue for Prostate Cancer Month 

    1 in 6 Australian men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer by the time they are 85. September is a time to 'get the facts straight' and learn how an early diagnosis and treatment produces better outcomes for patients.

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month 

    October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time of recognising the dangers of the disease and how an early detection can save your life.

    Purple for Queensland Mental Health Week, 13-17 October

    This initiative encourages individuals and communities to reflect on their mental health and wellbeing and recognise the importance of keeping mentally fit.

    Purple for International Mastocytosis & Mast Cell Diseases Awareness Day, 20 October 

    Landmarks and venues across Australia and New Zealand are lighting up purple tonight to raise awareness for Mast Cell Activation Disorders (MCADs), including mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome. 

    MCADs are complex, ranging from moderately disruptive to life-threatening, and are often severely debilitating. 

    The #SpotOurSpots campaign aims to raise awareness of the need for more accurate diagnostics, better treatments and further investments in research, as well as to build hope for all patients living with MCADs.     Red for Day for Daniel, 31 October

    Join Australia by wearing red to spread awareness of child safety issues, promoting a future with safer communities for children one step at a time.

  • Orange for Zonta - 16 Days of Activiism - Elimination of Gender Based Violence Prevention 

    During this time, Zonta clubs and districts will promote the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign worldwide, spreading awareness that gender-based violence is never okay.
