Local rugby league fans are in for a treat as Roma plays host to one of seven massive Hostplus Cup games across regional Queensland as part of the Active Queensland! Country Week round.

On Sunday, 24 July 2022, defending premiers Norths Devils will go head-to-head with Burleigh Bears at Cities’ Arthur Beetson Oval. With the Hostplus Cup formulating the highest-level regional rugby league football competition in Queensland, the Rugby League Extravaganza will be a must-see football event for the whole community.

As part of the spectacle, Senior Mens and Ladies Queensland Outback v Northern Peninsula games will take place during the event.

Local Under 16’s teams that form part of the Roma and District Rugby League competition will also battle it out on the day with Under 8’s taking the field during half-time breaks.

Mayor Golder said the event had the potential to provide a boost to the region and inspire local rugby league fans.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring mates and family together for a weekend celebration of quality rugby league, whilst also providing opportunity for community involvement”, Cr Golder said.

“On Saturday morning, teams that form part of the Roma & District Junior Rugby League competition, will parade down McDowall Street, Roma as part of a much-anticipated past tradition”.

Funding through Sport Australia and the Regional Sports Event Fund has been received to support the event with Council also providing in-kind assistance.
