SCULPTURES OUT BACK SHOWCASES THE MARANOA’S ARTISTIC TREASURES
Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Be sure to add Sculptures Out Back to your itinerary!
The exhibition, now in its second year, attracted 19 entries from artists far and wide, exhibiting expressions of outdoor sculpture installation pieces. The task of selecting the winning entries was appointed to award-winning Queensland artist and sculptor Cameron Eaton, Pastoralist and Philanthropist Tim Fairfax and Stakeholder Liaison for Origin Energy, Matt Harland.
After extensive deliberation, the $10,000 Maranoa Regional Council Acquisitive Local Prize was awarded to Daniel Ferry who wired together Roma’s Rustiest Bottle Tree.
Daniel entered the competition not expecting to win but saw the exhibition as an opportunity to exhibit his craftmanship to the masses.
“Driving through Roma all you see is bottle trees and now there’s one made of wire which will hopefully keep travellers in the town a little longer and put us on the map,” Mr Ferry said.
The 2021 Maranoa Regional Council Acquisitive Local Prize winner, Kyle Mansfield, returned this year and was crowned the Bungil Gallery People’s Choice Prize winner.
Kyle’s sculpture features more than 400 horseshoes welded together to create an eye catching, life size horse.
“The horse has been purchased by the local Turf Club so it’s great to see my work is staying local,” he said.
Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Tyson Golder congratulated all artists who submitted an entry.
“Council is proud to sponsor this fantastic event and provide a platform for our talented locals,” Mayor Golder said.
“It’s free to visit the exhibition on the Warrego Highway near the Big Rig, and I encourage residents and travellers to take a look at the magnificent sculptures before exhibition concludes at the end of October.”
The $20,000 Origin/APLNG Acquisitive Open Prize was awarded to Gabe Parker who sculpted entry, Aves #4.
The $5,000 Hall Chadwick Emerging Artist Prize was awarded to Lachlin Iland with his sculpture titled Emu.
The $2,000 Roma Wire & Steel Acquisitive Garden Seat Prize was awarded to Rob Buckland with his entry Seat of Knowledge.
