Roma Saleyards Interpretive Centre renamed to honour local's legacy
In July 2022, Maranoa Regional Council sought community consultation for the naming of the Roma Saleyards Interpretive Centre.
Council invited residents to take part in the Have Your Say questionnaire and submit their suggestions for what they believe would be a great name for the Interpretive Centre in keeping with the cattle industry and the historical importance of the Roma Saleyards.
In an Ordinary Meeting of Council held on Wednesday, 9 November Council resolved to name the Roma Saleyards Interpretive Centre the Val Harms Roma Saleyards Interactive Centre (after Charles Valentine Harms, (AKA) Val Harms Junior or CVH).
Mayor Tyson Golder said that naming the state-of-the-art interpretive centre after Charles “Val” Harms was a fitting tribute to an important figure in the local cattle industry. “Val was a well-respected part of the industry for many, many years. He had the distinction of being present at the inaugural sale at the Roma Saleyards and is such an integral part of the yard’s 53 year history,” Cr Golder said. “With the renaming of the interpretive centre to the Val Harms Roma Saleyards Interactive Centre, his legacy will continue to be shared with both locals and visitors”.
The Roma Saleyards will display a visual exhibit confirming Val Harm’s significant contribution to both the Maranoa cattle industry and the Roma Saleyards.
