Mitchell memorial park reopening ribbon cut

Mitchell Memorial Park officially reopened last Friday, 2 December 2022 to much community fanfare and celebration.

Residents were invited to the unveiling of the new park, which was officially re-opened by Mayor Tyson Golder, followed by Christmas In The Park hosted by the Rotary Club of Mitchell and Booringa Action Group.

The Mitchell Memorial Park Upgrade Project saw a range of enhancements come to the park, including a new eye-catching destination playground that was conceptualised by award-winning playground designers, Urban Play. The playground was designed for youth of all ages and ability levels and is sure to be well utilised.

“It is such an honour to play a role in this special project. This destination playground will not only boost the characteristics of the town, but it will become a place where first birthdays, celebratory sausage sizzles and picnics are held. It will be a place where countless memories are made,” said Kate Heise-Seabrook, playground designer from Urban Play. “The design incorporates age-appropriate play activities for users of all ages and abilities. Helping to develop vital physical, social and emotional skills, the new look Memorial Park has something for the whole family to enjoy.”

Mayor Tyson Golder was thrilled to see it become the centrepiece of the re-opening ceremony, with local youth immediately testing out the new equipment. “It’s great to be re-opening this important local asset today. Seeing all the residents here – especially the young people using the new playground – is really special,” said Cr Golder. “Urban Play has done a top-notch job at making a safe, accessible and fun structure for our youth to enjoy”.

This project has been jointly funded through the Australian Government and Maranoa Regional Council at a total cost of around $900,000. The Australian Government contributed $210,000 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. This program supports local Councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A number of elements will be completed early in 2023, including additional footpath connections allowing wheelchair access from Ann Street and direct connection to the Mitchell Multipurpose Health Facility. Two new shade structures are on order for the play area, and Council will investigate the addition of scooter jumps on the western footpath loop.
