To coincide with National Desexing Month, Maranoa Regional Council is offering cat and dog owners $100 desexing vouchers in an effort to encourage responsible animal ownership.

Managing unwanted litters is a considerable cost to the community. It also causes stress to the animals and the people who have to manage and try to rehome them.

Cats and dogs desexed in July are less likely to be pregnant or in-season, which makes it a quicker and easier procedure for the animal as well, and less costly for owners.

Cats, particularly, are prolific breeders having ten kittens each year on average. This can result in 111,111 kittens being born from one undesexed cat in just five years.

Mayor Tyson Golder is encouraging pet owners to take advantage of the cat and dog desexing vouchers to prevent unwanted litters, reducing the amount of stray and unwanted animals in our region.

“Stray and unwanted animals are costly to the region and cause undue stress to both the animal and the people who have to care for and rehome it. Now is a great time to desex your pet, and Council is offering several $100 vouchers to make it that much easier,” said Cr Golder.

Animal owners can contact Council from Monday, 3 July 2023 to receive their $100 desexing voucher.

Vouchers are limited to one per household and are only redeemable for registered and microchipped cats and dogs. Proof of both registration and microchipping is required.

The vouchers will be honoured at Maranoa Veterinary Surgery and Roma Vet Clinic and must be redeemed before Friday, 29 December 2023.

Council advises residents to act quickly to avoid missing out.
