Among the issues that Council considered in its Ordinary Meeting of 10 July 2024:

Councillor Portfolios

Council formally endorsed the reintroduction of a Councillor Portfolio system.  Portfolios assigned range in topic including Government Relations, Saleyards, Rural Roads, Environment and Waste, Sport and Recreation.  A full listing of the portfolios can be found here.

Recruitment of the Chief Executive Officer

Council resolved to appoint a new Chief Executive for the organisation.  Further details of this appointment will be released shortly.

Community Consultation – Roma Airport Services

Residents have approached Council about the services being provided at the Roma Airport, including the daily passenger services to and from Brisbane. At the meeting, it was resolved to conduct a community consultation to allow for feedback about the current services to ensure that service provision meets community needs and expectations. Further details of the consultation will be provided soon.

Major Construction Tenders Awarded

Major construction tenders were awarded for two major transformational projects that have been in the pipeline for a number of years.

Primaries Road, which was award to Suffcon Pty Ltd, will create a new multi-lane entrance to the Roma Saleyards loading ramps area and significantly improve the efficiency and safety at the Saleyards.

The Roma Rest Area project, which was awarded to local contractors DMAC, will provide an all-weather rest area beside Colts Cricket Club and improve the overall presentation of the eastern approach to Roma.

Further details of the projects will be released prior to construction commencement.

Denise Spencer Pool

Four items were considered to enable the redevelopment of the Denise Spencer Memorial Pool to continue to progress. These included a material change of use to cater for the new development, approving a short list of contractors to provide detailed pricing for the project, the relocation of the house at Feather Street and the management agreement for the pool in the lead up to the upgrade project.

Maranoa and Western Downs Collaboration

Council resolved to improve our collaboration arrangements with Western Downs Regional Council. Our adjoining regions share much in common, from natural resources, disaster risks and regional management issues. The working group will enable greater collaboration and sharing of experience and knowledge for the benefit of both regions.

Roma Saleyards Charity Sale Days

Council supported a request from both LifeFlight and the Royal Flying Doctors Service for each hold Store Sale Fundraisers at the Roma Saleyards. Further details will be published closer to the events.  Council acknowledged the important role these aero-medical services play to our community and was proud to once again support these fundraising events.

Roma Rural Student Hostel

Council approved a request to extend the Roma Rural Student Hostel Management Agreement for a further ten-year term until 31 May 2034. The hostel provides a critical service to our community by accommodating students from remote areas in South West Queensland to attend schooling in Roma.

User Agreement and Lease Renewal

At the meeting, Council approved the renewal of agreements with the Injune Cricket Association and lease for commercial space on the corner of Hutton Street and Second Avenue.  The agreements will ensure the ongoing use of the Steve Murray Sports Oval as well as continue to the continuation of the popular Café on Second.
