The Denise Spencer Memorial Swimming Pool is set for a major upgrade with a $9.5 million funding injection from the Federal Government.

Announced yesterday, the funding is part of the Growing Regions Program, which supports infrastructure projects in regional, rural and remote areas across Australia.

Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Wendy Taylor said the funding will play a critical role in enhancing the pool’s development, improving recreational facilities and strengthening community infrastructure.

“This investment represents a significant step in upgrading local amenities – creating a modern and accessible space that will benefit both residents and visitors,” Cr Taylor said.

“The funding will enable the completion of key revitalisation works to deliver long-lasting improvements to our region’s social, sporting and recreational infrastructure.”

Mayor Taylor also thanked Senator Anthony Chisholm and Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud for their ongoing advocacy for the project.

“We acknowledge their significant contributions to securing this funding,” Cr Taylor said.

The pool revitalisation will feature a new state of the art facility including, a 50-metre shaded, outdoor pool, as well as the addition of a 25-metre indoor, heated pool, and a children's pool and water slide attractions.

A total of 25 projects shared in the latest funding to support the construction and upgrade of community infrastructure.

Maranoa Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Spokesperson for Major Projects: Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy Cameron O’Neil said the funding commitment was a long-term investment in the broader Maranoa community.

"Partnership projects with the Federal and State Governments are essential for driving ongoing improvements in our region and meeting the expectations of our community," Cr O’Neil said.

“This funding marks a pivotal moment in our region's development, ensuring that future generations will benefit from enhanced infrastructure and opportunities for growth.”

The latest funding followed more than $50 million allocated to nine community infrastructure projects across Queensland over the past year.

Councillor and Portfolio Spokesperson for Sport and Recreation Peter Flynn further emphasised the positive impact of the investment on the region’s infrastructure.

“The Denise Spencer Memorial Swimming Pool has long been a beloved community asset in Roma,” Cr Flynn said.

“This revitalisation project will ensure it continues to serve as a central hub for recreation, sport and family fun.

“These projects contribute to building stronger communities and improving everyday life for our Maranoa residents.”

The Growing Regions Program provides funding ranging from $500,000 to $15 million for local government entities and not-for-profit organisations to deliver vital community infrastructure projects.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said quality infrastructure in regional areas was invaluable and the funding would build and upgrade key facilities that could be enjoyed by communities for years to come.

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King further said the Federal Government was committed to investing in regional Australia to create jobs, build opportunity and unlock economic growth and productivity.

“We’re making sure our regions remain great places to live, work and play by investing in critical community and economic infrastructure across regional and rural areas, in a fair and transparent way,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing the successful projects roll out across the nation, supporting employment, stimulating economies and strengthening communities.”

Council will provide a further update on the Denise Spencer Memorial Swimming Pool redevelopment shortly, including details on the construction timeline, impacts and the benefits the upgraded facility will bring to the Roma community and the wider Maranoa region.
