Local Government Remuneration Commission

At its meeting on 12 February, Council received and noted the determinations made by the Local Government Remuneration Commission's in its 2024 Annual Report.

The independent commission is established by the Queensland State Government and is responsible for looking at the salaries of every councillor and mayor in Queensland, except for those in the Brisbane City Council.

Once the Commission’s determination is made, the process is automatic without Council’s involvement. However, Council can choose to set a lesser amount.

Mayor Wendy Taylor said that following the independent body’s decision was important to avoid the perception of Councillors setting their own salary.

“Throughout the last term of Council I voted in favour of accepting the recommendations of the independent decision maker,” she said.

“I have consistently said that I don't think it's fair to expect Councillors to decide what we should get paid, nor fair to the community. That’s why an independent body is important.

“While we shouldn’t make the decision, it is an important part of the process that it is discussed transparently in Council.

“I am constantly amazed at how hard I see my fellow Councillors work, and the efforts they put into their own portfolios and all the work of Council. Not to mention the nights and weekends they are representing Council at events and meeting with members of the community.

“I could not put a fair value on their enthusiasm and efforts, and I am pleased I don't have to.”
