The heavy vehicle area within the truck stop precinct at the Roma Saleyards will undergo significant improvements with the announcement of asphalt surfacing works.

The resurfacing project is part of the fourth tranche of the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area (HVRA) initiative, which is designed to improve road safety for heavy vehicle drivers and other road users by addressing the shortage of appropriate rest stops in key locations.

The project is part of a $17.4 million joint investment between the Australian Government, state, territory and local governments, reflecting the ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and safety for all road users.

Maranoa Regional Council Mayor and Portfolio Spokesperson for Roma Saleyards Wendy Taylor welcomed the funding announcement.

"This upgrade is a crucial step in improving the safety and efficiency of the Roma truck stop precinct,” Cr Taylor said.

“The works will provide a better and safer resting place for heavy vehicle drivers, who are vital to our regional economy.

“We are pleased to see this investment from all levels of government, which will contribute to improved road safety and support the continued growth of our community."

Under the fourth tranche of the initiative, funding will support a variety of upgrades, including the construction of new rest areas with essential facilities such as toilets and picnic areas, as well as resurfacing, line-marking and bitumen sealing of existing areas.

Design works will be finalised in the coming months with construction currently scheduled for delivery in late-2025.

Assistant Minister for Regional Development Senator Anthony Chisholm said the investment in upgraded and new rest areas represented another important step in the government's continued efforts to improve road safety.

“By investing in much-needed rest stops, we will ensure that our truckies spend less time on the roads and get home safely to their loved ones,” Senator Chisholm said.

Chair of the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Steering Committee Senator Glenn Sterle said the committee was steadfast in their commitment to keep freight operators and communities safe.

“I am very proud that the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area initiative is boosting heavy vehicle user safety and productivity through new and upgraded rest areas,” Senator Sterle said.

“These new and upgraded rest stops will help truckies manage their fatigue as they work hard keeping our country moving.”

Council will provide continued updates on the project’s ongoing progression and completion.
