Primaries Road extension marks milestone completion

The highly anticipated extension of Primaries Road, located at Roma Saleyards, has been completed, marking a significant milestone for the region.
This vital infrastructure upgrade will improve access, safety and efficiency within the saleyard’s precinct, providing long-term benefits for transport operators, livestock producers and buyers alike.
The extension is a crucial step in maintaining the Roma Saleyards' status as Australia's largest cattle selling centre and ensuring Roma remains a leading player in the national livestock industry.
This project has been delivered in partnership with the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (formerly Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program) and the Roads to Recovery Program.
The Australian Government has invested $1.783 million towards the project, while Maranoa Regional Council has contributed a further $1.234 million.
Maranoa Regional Council Mayor and Roma Saleyards Portfolio Spokesperson Wendy Taylor expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s progress.
“The Primaries Road extension is a significant upgrade for our region and the saleyard’s facility,” Cr Taylor said.
“It not only reinforces Roma’s position as a key hub for livestock sales, but also significantly improves safety and efficiency for all users of the saleyards.
“This investment will continue to benefit producers, buyers and transport operators for many years to come.”
Once completed, the project will deliver several key benefits to the community and the local economy:
- Better Access and Connectivity: The extended and sealed road will provide a more reliable route for heavy vehicles, reducing wear and tear on trucks and improving turnaround times for transport operators.
- Smoother Traffic Flow: Reduced congestion within the saleyard’s precinct will allow for more efficient vehicle movement, particularly on sale days when traffic is at its peak.
- Safer Travel: A dedicated heavy vehicle access route will separate large transport movements from general traffic, reducing the risk of accidents and improving on-site safety for truck drivers, saleyard staff and visitors.
- Dedicated Pre-Unloading Parking Areas: New designated parking zones will provide transport operators with a safe and efficient area to stage trucks before unloading, minimising delays and enhancing overall saleyard logistics.
- Boost to the Local Economy: The improved cattle movement efficiency will attract more buyers and sellers to the region, supporting local businesses and creating additional employment opportunities.
Mayor Taylor reaffirmed Council’s commitment to delivering this critical infrastructure to ensure Roma remains a leader in the cattle industry and continues to drive economic growth for the Maranoa region.
