Council hosts engaging event management session for Roma high school students
Maranoa Regional Council recently hosted an event management session for Roma State College students providing valuable insights into the planning, coordination and execution of community events.
Hosted in the Council Chambers last Friday, the hands-on session focused on the behind-the-scenes work involved in organising successful events and offering students practical knowledge about event planning.
Several cohorts at Roma State College had been studying event management as part of their curriculum.
The students explored major local events, such as the Maranoa Christmas Street Party and Easter in the Country, while learning about the various roles, responsibilities and career opportunities within local government and event management.
Portfolio Spokesperson for Economic Development and Events Cr Joh Hancock said the session provided a valuable and enriching learning experience for the students.
“We were thrilled to welcome the students to the Council Chambers and give them an inside look at how we plan, execute and support major community events,” Cr Hancock said.
“It was a great opportunity to show them the diverse careers within local government and how these roles contribute to the success of our community events.”
Council staff delivered a detailed presentation outlining the many roles the Council plays in supporting and running events.
The session covered all aspects of event planning – from the initial stages to final execution and highlighted the importance of community engagement and careful coordination.
As a hands-on exercise, the students presented their own mock event ideas to the group, showcasing their newfound skills in planning and presenting community events.
“It was exciting to see their creativity and teamwork come to life in their mock event proposals,” Cr Hancock said.
Roma State College Year 11 student Gaeb Ambos said it was an engaging session.
"As part of our Sport and Recreation course, we’re learning about event planning for sporting events, and we came here to learn more about that process,” he said.
Portfolio Spokesperson for Tourism Cr Jane Vincent emphasised the importance of events from a tourism perspective.
“Events play a crucial role in attracting visitors to our region and showcasing the unique experiences we offer,” Cr Vincent said,
“Through this session, students were able to see firsthand how successful events not only engage the local community, but also draw tourism and create economic benefits for the region.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for them to understand the full impact that well-planned events can have on tourism and local businesses.”
The session was designed not only to educate students about the event management process, but also inspire them to explore potential careers and volunteering opportunities in the space.
