A Fond Farewell but an Exciting New Beginning on the Horizon

As we approach Friday, 4 April 2025, we prepare to mark the end of an era for one of Roma’s most well used and loved community spaces — the Denise Spencer Memorial Pool.
This will be the final day of swimming before the pool closes for a major redevelopment, transforming the space to meet the needs of future generations while honouring its deeply rooted history.
The story of Roma’s public pool began with the humble Roma Baths — a place that brought people together and helped generations of locals learn to swim.
As the community grew, so did the call for a more modern facility.
That call was answered with the construction of the Denise Spencer Memorial Pool, made possible through the dedication and advocacy of community members, volunteers, and Council.
Named after Roma’s own Denise Spencer — Olympic swimmer and gold medallist at the 1950 British Empire Games — the pool has proudly carried forward her legacy.
For decades, it has been a place for training, competition, family fun, school carnivals, and simple summer joy.
Through the years, the facility has seen many upgrades, including improved amenities and the addition of shade structures — continuing to evolve in response to the needs of the community.
Behind the scenes, pool managers, lifeguards, support staff and volunteers have helped create a facility that is safe, welcoming and community-focused.
“On behalf of Council and the community, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many individuals who have managed and maintained the pool over the years — each one has contributed to its atmosphere, safety and community spirit,” said Mayor Wendy Taylor.
“I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Stacey Robertson and her team, who have managed the facility over the past 10 years.
“Thank-you for your service to our community and we wish you all the very best for the future."
As this beloved chapter comes to a close, we turn our focus to the future with hope and excitement.
While the closure marks the end of one era, it is also just another step in the ongoing journey of this valued community facility — one that continues to grow and adapt alongside the people it serves.
The redevelopment will deliver a brand-new 50-metre outdoor pool, complemented by a heated 25-metre indoor pool.
A dedicated children’s splash zone with slides will provide family fun all year round, while modern, accessible amenities will ensure comfort for all users.
The facility will also feature improved spectator seating and shaded spaces, designed to enhance the experience for families, schools, clubs, and visitors alike.
Until We Swim Again

Together, you’ve made the Denise Spencer Memorial Pool more than just a place to swim — you’ve made it a cherished part of Roma’s story.
We’re now turning our attention to the redevelopment and look forward to reopening the doors and welcoming you back to a revitalised pool facility that blends our proud history with an inspiring new future.
