Denise Spencer Memorial Pool Reopens

The Denise Spencer Memorial Pool has been reopened following the hyperchlorination process that was undertaken on Monday.

The decision to close and treat the pool was made on advice from Queensland Health as a recommended precautionary measure following a potential contact with Cryptosporidium.

The incident does not reflect on the management of the Council facility. Pool users can be assured that Queensland Health advice was followed promptly with a focus on the wellbeing of the community.

Background:

Cryptosporidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease caused by the microscopic parasite Cryptosporidium. It is a common cause of acute diarrhoea in young children.

When a reported case is known to have visited a public location while infectious, for example a swimming pool or other public aquatic facility, Queensland Health notifies the facility and works with them to minimise the risk of further transmission.

You can help keep our pools safe and available for constant use by following these simple steps:

  • Shower and wash with soap before swimming. Make sure your bottom is clean.
  • Wash hands with soap after using the toilet or changing a nappy.
  • Only change nappies in nappy change areas.
  • Avoid swallowing pool water.
  • Don’t swim if you have had diarrhoea within the last 14 days.
