Maranoa Regional Council advises residents from Mitchell and surrounds that the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, First Nations fire practitioners, and Maranoa Regional Council officers will be conducting a fire management workshop with burns planned on the corner of Nalpa Downs Rd and Warrego Highway, Womalilla, starting Saturday 14 September weather conditions permitting.
Fire Management and Cool Burn Workshop:
QFES have partnered with First Nations fire practitioners and Maranoa Regional Council to conduct a demonstration burn on council land this Saturday 14th September in Womalilla, showcasing the benefits of using low intensity fire as a land management tool.
The workshop will begin with First Nations fire practitioners sharing a traditional approach to burning country, along with the cultural significance and landscape benefits of the practice. QFES will also discuss the similarities and differences between hot and cool burning, hazard reduction, and how these overlap with the traditional practice of cultural burning.
QFES and Traditional Owners will carry out a burn throughout the remainder of the reserve, including through a trial site of mother-of-millions, as a partnership experiment with Maranoa Regional Council around the use of fire as a weed management tool. Participants are welcome to engage with representatives and each other on the topic of fire as a land management tool and are encouraged to find out how they might use this practice on their own land.
